Cataract Surgery
“Cataract” is a word used to describe the clouding of
the normally clear lens of the eye. This lens, located behind the
pupil, focuses light onto the retina in the back of the eye. When
it becomes cloudy, it becomes more difficult for light to pass through
it.
Cataracts usually start as a slight cloudiness that progressively
grows worse. The retina receives less and less light. The light
that does reach it becomes increasingly blurred and distorted. This
causes blurred vision, sensitivity to light and glare, distortion,
and dimming of colors and vision. People with advanced cataracts
often find that their everyday activities like driving, reading
and watching TV become increasingly difficult.
What causes cataracts?
The development of cataracts is a normal part of the aging process.
Almost everyone eventually gets cataracts. Cataracts can also be
caused by a severe injury or blow to the eye, the use of certain
drugs or medications, exposure to harmful chemicals, excessive sunlight
and some diseases. Some infants are born with congenital cataracts.
In some cases, cataracts may develop during childhood.
How can cataracts be treated?
In the early stages of cataracts, a change in eyeglasses prescription
may improve vision temporarily. There are no medications or eye
drops that will eliminate cataracts. Cataracts can be removed with
surgery during an outpatient visit. This surgery should be performed
when poor vision interferes with daily life.
What happens during cataract surgery?
The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Drops are used
to numb the eye, then a tiny incision is made. Special instruments
are used to break up and suction out the cloudy lens. The back portion
of the lens capsule is left in place and polished for clarity. A
small foldable intraocular lens is inserted and unfolded in place
of the natural lens. The incision is self-sealing. Usually, no stitches
or patches are required. Most people return to normal activities
quickly after their surgery.
How successful is cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly and successfully performed
procedures in the world. The doctors at Regional Eye Center have
improved the vision of thousands of patients with cataract surgery.
Many patients report that following cataract surgery their
vision is better than it has been in years. If your eyes are healthy,
the chances of restoring good vision with cataract surgery are excellent.
